Homebirth Access Sydney has recently met with advisers of both the federal Minister for Health (Nicola Roxon) and the Minister for the Status of Women (Tanya Plibersek) about implementing the ALP’s 2007 National Platform with respect to homebirth. Specifically, we have asked them to honour their commitments to provide Medicare Provider Numbers to independent practising midwives so that independent homebirth becomes publicly funded in Australia; and to support independent midwives in obtaining professional indemnity insurance.

We now need your active support to take forward the campaign to fund homebirth in Australia.

Click here to download a letter to send to both Ministers and to your local Member of Parliament. Letters to politicians are most effective when you include your own personal story so we would encourage you to personalise the draft as much as you wish and please print, sign and post these three letters as soon as possible.

A flood of letters arriving soon after our meetings will make sure that the MPs understand that there is real concern in the community about this issue and that we will be watching to make sure that they deliver on their election commitments.  Your letters should be sent to:

The Hon Nicola Roxon MP

Minister for Health and Ageing
Parliament House
CANBERRA  ACT  2600

 AND

The Hon Tanya Plibersek MP

Minister for the Status of Women and Minister for Housing
Parliament House
CANBERRA  ACT  2600

Finally, please send a third letter addressed to your local Member of Parliament. If you are unsure of the details of your local federal MP, please see the Australian Electoral Commission website at: www.aec.gov.au

Homebirth with an independent midwife is currently the only way to have a baby in Australia with professional maternity care that is totally unfunded by the Australian Government. With your help, we hope to bring Australia into line with the UK, New Zealand, the Netherlands and numerous other countries that fund homebirth. If you would like to know more about our campaign or would like to help more, please call Danni on 9011 5708 or email her on dannit@bigpond.net.au

Please forward this email to anyone who you think may want to send a letter of support, including your contacts from all over Australia.

Thank you for your support.
